Week 12: Clothes are Hard

Updated: Apr 26, 2023

Well, it has been a very busy week this week with the new milestone for my project coming up this Tuesday, but it has been an interesting week! I've been working on creating more layout animations for my film, and it may be hopeful thinking, but I definitely feel like I can see some improvement in my animations for these layouts vs. my initial ones. It is possible this is because perhaps I spent more time on these, or because I'm becoming more confident and at ease with the animation process now that I'm deeper in it, but either way I'm very pleased with the progress I'm making!

The main challenge of the week, though: clothes! For this milestone, I need to have Arne and Signe's clothing finalized, with both the sculpting and texturing. Figuring out how to sculpt clothing in ZBrush has been a bit of a struggle, especially when it comes to figuring out how much detail to put into clothing that is going to be animated later on down the line. However, by now Arne's clothing is wrapped up and textured, and Signe's is nearly done, so I'm excited with where I'm at! It's been pretty fun going back into Substance Painter and toying around with the coloring and details on the clothing, and I've learned some new tools in Substance Painter while doing so!

Arne's clothing underwent a bit of a redesign as I was sculpting, as I realized while putting everything together that his original design was a bit... plain and not very Viking-like. I went back and looked for some more inspiration and historical recreations, and came up with something similar to my original concept but less basic! I definitely like his clothing design much more, and I feel it adds more character to him!
